bookSUCCESSFUL YCS SPRING BOOK FAIR
Updated May 14, 2012

We wanted to thank everyone for their participation and support during Celebration of Literacy Week/Scholastic Book Fair. On Monday, while coming to school in their pajamas to kick off our Pajama Drive along with the week's events, all students enjoyed a program of music and storytelling by Kitty Sullivan.  Also the east and west lobby display, "Thanks to My Teacher, I'm Hooked on Books," was a great success and a lot of fun for the kids.

As for the Book Fair itself, not only did we help the children to embrace reading for all the joy and pleasure it can bring, we also accomplished a tremendous amount:
- Total sales were $6442.12, which allows our Principal, Samantha Kaplan, over $4500 in Scholastic dollars -- which she will use to purchase support materials, audio visual equipment and school supplies and to further fill the classroom libraries.
- There were 193 books purchased for the school.
- There were 108 pajamas donated to children in need.
- There were 179 fish collected for the "Hooked on Books" display.

Special thanks go to several of our Book Fair Committee members: Stacey Weinberg, Mary Yuen and Caroline Silva-Millan for creating and working on the "Hooked on Books" display; Kim Tyner and Elizabeth Sullivan for working on and promoting the pajama drive; Manjari Purohit, Jennifer Steinfink and Nancy Bastock for working on the teacher wish lists; and Randi Dubno Gardner, Susan Shakarchy, Jane Zennario and Manjari for the food donations for Thursday's ELA workshop. Thanks also to Randi for being available for all Book Fair shifts and assisting with cashiering and closeout for each day.

We also want to acknowledge Samantha, Assistant Principal Martin Woodard and teachers Marisa Nystrom, Sindy Weisinger and Kim Gerson for their very informative presentation on reading levels at the workshop.  And finally, our appreciation to Erin Farrell Talbot, author of LIAM'S WINDOW, who provided our kindergarteners with story time on Friday.

Again, thanks to everyone for their support, and we look forward to continued success in the future.

Updated May 2, 2012

The third annual spring auction was an incredible success! With a packed room, wonderful items and great food, the auction beat all expectations. From the friendly competitive bidding to the toasts to our new home,  it is clear that at YCS we have built something special.

Of course, the auction could not have been a success without the participation of many parents, underwriters, and donors. We want to extend a heart felt thank you to the event co-chairs Susan Fosmoen, Gabrielle Goldberg, Glenn Hardy and David Weiss; the many incredible volunteers; Samantha, Martin, our wonderful teachers and staff; the generous family underwriters, donors and sponsors; and last but certainly not least – the bidders!

Thanks to the hard work, dedication and generosity of many, we raised nearly $60,000! This puts us one step closer to our goal of raising the funds necessary for all of our students to experience the wonderful programs provided by our enrichment partners. From chess to music, each program adds depth to the incredible education that our children are getting at YCS.

Updated April 22, 2012

A primary goal of the PTA is to work with the teachers to insure that they have the classroom tools and supplies necessary to provide a first-rate academic experience.

In an effort to make the procurement of school supplies easier and less expensive, the PTA has partnered with Staples SchoolKidz again this year. The benefits are many, including one easy form to complete, no trips to the store, lines to wait in, fast and convenient ordering and delivery directly to school for the first day, and a substantial savings to YCS families.

Participation in the program is voluntary. If you are unable or not interested in participating, supplies can be purchased elsewhere and brought to school on the first day. The deadline to participate in the Staples SchoolKidz Program and purchase supplies for the 2012-2013 School Year is MAY 3, 2012 at 9:00 AM.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at pta@yorkvillecommnityschool.org with any questions.

PTA Growing Tree

GROW WITH YCS CAMPAIGN
Updated November 22, 2011

I am thrilled to report to you the great success of the "Grow with YCS" campaign for the PTA General Fund.  As a result of the hard work of Maria Mischel, Christina Taber-Kewene, Mary Yuen and Jane Zennario, over the past week we have received a total of 66 donations (55 new families and 11 repeat) for a total of $24,034.93! This brings our school participation rate for the General Fund to 47% for the school year to date.

Every dollar raised will directly support the important enrichment programs all of our children participate in every day.  While we didn't have a class reach the 100% participation goal to receive a pizza party we would like to extend a hearty congratulations to the class on each grade level with the highest participation rate. As a special thank you from the Grow with YCS committee and the YCS PTA, each of these classes will be receiving milk and cookies in their classrooms on Wednesday, November 23rd.

K201 68% participation
1-310 47% participation
2-403 64% participation

Thank you to all who have donated to the General Fund thus far. General Fund donations will continue to be collected throughout the school year. Every donation, no matter the size, is 100% tax deductible and is counted towards our goal of 100% community participation.  The closer we come to meeting this goal, the more likely we will be able to qualify for grants and support from outside organizations.

Thank you again to the "Grow with YCS" committee and all of you who have contributed to the PTA.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Gabrielle Goldberg, VP Fund-raising

Bill HarleyBILL HARLEY FAMILY CONCERT
Updated November 5, 2011

We were all so excited to welcome Bill Harley, a two-time Grammy award-winning artist and author to our school on November 2 and 3rd. Bill used song and story to paint an animated and amusing picture of growing up, schooling and family life.

With smiles from ear to ear, we would like to extend a huge thank you for both the Sold-Out Bill Harley concert and the two days of works shops that our children enjoyed. Due to the overwhelming generosity of our families we were able to raise over $1200 for our new library!

We would like to specifically thank the Turtel Family for introducing us to Bill and underwriting his fee, and the Mischel and McKiernan Families for providing the food and beverage that we all enjoyed. While you are out and about in the neighborhood, please be sure to stop by Luigi's and thank them for the generous discount extended to our school. For additional information check out Bill’s website at www.billharley.com.

fall festivalTHANK YOU FOR A SUCCESSFUL YCS FALL FESTIVAL
Updated September 25, 2011

Thank you! The third annual fall festival was an incredible success! With gorgeous weather and a wonderful community spirit, the festival beat all expectations. From the smiles on the children's faces to the collegiality of the various teachers and staff, it is clear that at YCS we have built something impressive and special.

Of course, the festival could not have been a success without the participation of many parents, underwriters, community members and enrichment partners. We want to extend a heart felt thank you to the event chairs Gabrielle Goldberg and Maria Mischel and the many wonderful volunteers, to the generous family underwriters and corporate donors, to the bakers and our enrichment partners.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of many, YCS was able to raise close to $10,000, much more than we have raised at this event in the previous years. This puts us one step closer to our goal of raising the funds necessary for all of our students to experience the wonderful programs provided by our enrichment partners. From chess to music, each program adds depth to the incredible education that our children are getting at YCS.

Once again, Thank you to all that worked so hard to make this year's Fall Festival such an incredible success.  - Caroline Hall and Lori Levin

PTA ANNUAL FUNDRAISING APPEAL
Updated September 14, 2011

The Annual Appeal is a very important way that you can support the YCS school community. The Parent Teacher Association provides support to the principal and staff and assists the school in raising money to provide supplemental educational programs and activities to further enhance the school curriculum.

With our new school location and the continued growth of our student body, the economic needs of our school are growing. The goal of the YCS Annual Appeal is 100% participation.  The percent participation is an important factor as we apply for grants for additional support of our school from corporations and our elected officials.

Funds raised through the Annual Appeal will directly support programs like Asphalt Green recess program, Chess, 92Y, Salvadori, and Aussie staff development.  This year, we are requesting a donation of $1,250 per child - but no amount is too small.

Given the economic environment, we understand all families may not be able to contribute this amount in full. All donations are welcomed and will have a tremendous impact on efforts to reach our goal of 100% participation.

Please consider making your donation right now using our NEW ON-LINE system using your credit card, debit card or PayPal account.   All donations will be kept strictly confidential and the YCS PTA is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) corporation. All donations are tax deductible and 100% of the funds will directly benefit our children.  Please also check with your employers in order to take advantage of opportunities for corporate matching - an easy way of increasing donations.  We look forward to your participation and to continuing to build a vibrant and supportive school community.
